Rodriguez is a patronymic surname derived from the personal name "Rodrigo" and connotes son of Rodrigo. Rodrigo is the Spanish form of the Teutonic name Roderic , Roderick or possibly Rodolph meaning "Famed Leader" or "Famous Wolf." Appeared in 711AD with King Roderic. Also appeared as El Campeador in 1043AD. Composer Juaquin Rodrigo(1901-1999) created Concierto d'Aranjuez.
Our Rodriguez family has an oral tradition that holds its roots with a group of Families that immigrated from the Canary Islands to San Fernando de Bexar in 1731, that today, we call San Antonio, Texas. The migration has been reconstructed from tradition,' old wives tales' and historical facts. These have been put into book form by Samuel M. Buck in a book titled : YANAGUANA'S SUCCESSORS : the story of the Canary Islanders Immigration into Texas in the Eighteenth Century.
Other historians have also put this history to pen. I. J. COX. in his account titled: THE EARLY SETTLERS OF SAN FERNANDO and the MATTIE ALICE AUSTIN account titled: THE MUNICIPAL GOVERNMENT OF SAN FERNANDO DE BEXAR, 1730-1800.
There is a Second Canary Islander's Migration that took place between 1778-1783. The port of entry was New Orleans by way of Havana, Cuba. It is unclear to which of these migrations the stories allude. The truth may exist in both or in part.
The Rodriguez Family also 'grew up' around El Senor de Los Milagros. This Chapel or Shrine ,located close to Frio and Laredo streets not far from downtown San Antonio Texas, was built in the early 1800's. The Shrine came into the family with the marriage of Clemete Rodriguez to Candelaria Ximenes. People come to this Chapel from all over the world to worship and to proclaim their faith.
